Getting tattooed on vacation in Mystic or Misquamicut

Getting tattooed on vacation works best on the last day of your trip. A new tattoo needs 4 weeks out of the ocean and the pool, so a Monday tattoo can cost you a week of Misquamicut beach days. Irish Rose Tattoo is 8 minutes from Misquamicut and 12 minutes from Mystic, and here is how summer visitors plan around both.

Every summer a good share of the people in our chairs are on vacation. They are renting a house off Atlantic Avenue in Misquamicut, staying near the Seaport in Mystic, or spending a week at a family place in Watch Hill. A tattoo from the trip is a fine souvenir. It just takes a little more planning than a T-shirt.

This guide covers the timing, the booking, and what to pack so the tattoo heals well wherever you go home to.

When to get tattooed on vacation

The single most useful piece of advice: book the tattoo for the last full day of your trip, or the day before you drive home.

A fresh tattoo is an open wound for the first couple of weeks. It needs 2 to 4 weeks for the surface to heal and 4 weeks with no swimming or soaking. That means no ocean, no pool, no hot tub and no long baths. Salt water, chlorine and lake water all carry bacteria, and soaking pulls ink out of a tattoo before it has settled.

If you get tattooed on the first Monday of a two-week rental, you have just traded two weeks of swimming for a tattoo. If you get it on the last Friday, you lose nothing. You pack the car, you drive home, and you heal it on your own couch.

The same logic applies to boat days, kayaking on the Pawcatuck River, and paddleboarding off Watch Hill. Plan the water first, then the tattoo.

Booking a tattoo before you arrive

Tattoos at Irish Rose are booked through a three-step booking form: choose an artist, describe the idea, leave your contact details. We reply within two business days with a flat quote and open dates.

In summer, Saturdays fill about 3 weeks out. If your trip ends on a weekend, send your request before you leave home, not after you arrive. Tuesday through Friday is easier to get, and the shop is open 12 to 8 every one of those days.

Tony Asian, who does fine-line, script and small botanical work, books 4 to 6 weeks out. If you want a small fine-line piece from him, the earlier you send the request the better. Zak Sadloski handles American traditional, black and grey and larger work. If you are not sure who fits, choose “Any artist” on the form and we will match you.

Small vacation tattoos are common: a wave, a lighthouse, coordinates, a shell, a date in script. Anything small starts at the $80 shop minimum, and palm-sized fine-line pieces usually run $150 to $350. Every tattoo is quoted flat, never by the hour. A $50 deposit applies only to work quoted over $500, which most vacation tattoos are not. Full numbers are on the pricing page.

Piercings are walk-in

Piercings do not need a booking. Rayna Lundvall pierces walk-ins Tuesday through Saturday, 12 to 8, with needles and implant-grade titanium or 14k gold. Lobes are $40, helix $50 and conch $55, plus jewelry.

The same water rule applies: no swimming for 4 weeks with a new piercing. A lobe heals in 6 to 8 weeks, but cartilage takes 6 to 12 months, so a helix done on the first day of your trip is a helix you will be protecting from the ocean the whole time. Same advice as the tattoo: last day. Rayna’s piercing aftercare guide covers the rest.

Minors can get lobes from age 8 with a parent present and ID for both, and other piercings at 16 or 17 with a parent or guardian and both IDs. We do not tattoo anyone under 18, vacation or not.

Getting to the shop from Mystic and Misquamicut

Irish Rose Tattoo is at 9 East Ave, Unit A, in Westerly, with lot parking out front. Drive times from the usual vacation spots:

Starting point Drive to the shop
Misquamicut about 8 minutes
Watch Hill about 10 minutes
Stonington Borough about 10 minutes
Mystic about 12 minutes, 6 miles on Route 1
Pawcatuck about 5 minutes, over the Pawcatuck River bridge
Charlestown about 15 minutes on Route 1

From Mystic, take Route 1 east through Stonington and Pawcatuck, cross the bridge into Westerly, and you are close. In July and August, Route 1 through downtown Mystic slows down near the drawbridge, so leave a few extra minutes. Our Mystic page has the full directions.

From Misquamicut, head inland from Atlantic Avenue and you are at the shop in the time it takes to finish a coffee. Beach traffic is heaviest in the late afternoon, so an early afternoon appointment is easiest.

Sun, SPF and a fresh tattoo

Sun is the main reason vacation tattoos fade early. UV light breaks down pigment, and fresh skin burns faster than healed skin.

For the first 2 to 4 weeks, keep the tattoo out of direct sun entirely. Do not put sunscreen on it yet; sunscreen on an open tattoo clogs it and irritates it. Cover it with loose, light clothing instead: a long-sleeve linen shirt, loose pants, a wide hat for a neck or shoulder piece. If you are on the beach, sit under the umbrella.

Once it has fully healed and the skin is no longer shiny or flaking, use a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen on it every time it is in the sun, for the life of the tattoo. Fine-line work especially benefits. Thin lines have less ink, and sun is what blurs them.

Your travel aftercare kit

You will heal most of this tattoo at home, but the first few days happen in a rental, a hotel or the car. Pack these before tattoo day:

  • Fragrance-free liquid soap. A small bottle for washing the tattoo with clean hands. Rental house soap is often scented.
  • Unscented lotion. A thin layer once the tattoo starts to dry, a few times a day.
  • Clean paper towels. For patting it dry. Hotel and rental towels have been through other people’s laundry.
  • A clean pillowcase or old T-shirt. For the first nights, in case the tattoo weeps a little.
  • Loose clothing that covers the placement. For the drive home and for any time outside.
  • Your aftercare sheet. We print one for every client. The same steps are on our tattoo aftercare page.

If you are flying home, ask for the tattoo to be wrapped for the trip and keep the area away from tight seatbelts and armrests where you can.

Planning a trip around the tattoo

A few patterns work well for the people we see each summer.

Book the tattoo for the afternoon of your last day, then have dinner in downtown Westerly and drive home the next morning. You get every beach day and your first night of aftercare in one place.

If your group wants piercings and one person wants a tattoo, come together on the last day. Rayna takes walk-ins while the tattoo is underway.

If you come back to the area every year, start with a free 20-minute consultation on one trip and book the tattoo for the end of the next. Touch-ups are free within 90 days, except on hands, feet and fingers, so a return visit later in the season can double as the check.

Questions before you book

If something about your trip makes the timing tricky, call or text (401) 555-0100 during shop hours and we will help you work it out. For more on what to expect in the chair, read our first tattoo guide. If you are staying in Connecticut, the Stonington and Pawcatuck pages cover the drive from there.

Questions about this

Can I go to the beach after getting a tattoo?

You can sit on the beach in shade with the tattoo covered by loose clothing, but no swimming in the ocean or a pool for 4 weeks and no direct sun on it while it heals. That is why we suggest the last day of your trip.

Do you take walk-ins for tattoos in the summer?

Piercings are walk-in Tuesday through Saturday. Tattoos are booked through the request form, and in summer Saturdays fill about 3 weeks out, so send your request before you leave home.

How far is Irish Rose Tattoo from Mystic?

About 12 minutes, 6 miles east on Route 1 from downtown Mystic. From Misquamicut it is about 8 minutes, and from Watch Hill about 10.

What if I need a touch-up after I go home?

Touch-ups are free within 90 days, except on hands, feet and fingers. If you are back in the area for a weekend later in the summer or fall, text the shop and we will fit it in.
