Consultations

Free tattoo consultation in Westerly

A tattoo consultation at Irish Rose Tattoo is free and takes about 20 minutes, in person at 9 East Ave in Westerly or by phone. It is meant for large pieces, cover-ups and first tattoos with open questions, and you leave knowing the size, placement, price range and wait.

Most tattoos at Irish Rose can be quoted straight from the booking form: a description, a placement, a size and a couple of reference photos. Some pieces need a conversation first. That is what the consultation is for. It is free, it takes about twenty minutes, and it can happen at the shop on East Ave or over the phone.

You will talk with the artist who would do the work, not a front-desk stand-in. By the end you should know whether the idea works at the size you have in mind, where it sits best on your body, roughly what it will cost, and how far out the artist is booking.

When a tattoo consultation makes sense

Book a consultation if you are planning anything large, such as a half sleeve, a full sleeve, a back piece or a chest panel. Those are multi-session projects and it is worth agreeing on the overall layout before the first line goes in. Half sleeves start at $900, so you will also want to understand the deposit and how sessions are scheduled.

Book one for any cover-up tattoo. Zak Sadloski needs to see the old tattoo in person or in clear daylight photos to tell you what can go over it, how much larger and darker the new piece has to be, and whether a few sessions of laser lightening first would give you more options.

A consultation also helps if this is your first tattoo and you are unsure about placement, or if you want fine-line work in a spot that wears hard, like fingers, hands or feet. Tony Asian will be straight with you about what holds up and what does not.

In person or by phone

In-person consultations happen at the shop during regular hours, Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 8. They are better for cover-ups and for large work, because the artist can see the skin, measure the area and sketch rough placement directly on you with a skin marker.

Phone consultations suit clients who live farther away, or visitors planning a tattoo for a trip to Misquamicut or Watch Hill. Send your reference photos and any photos of the placement through the booking form first, so the artist has them in front of them when you talk.

What to bring to your consultation

  • Reference images: three to six pictures of the style, subject or mood you want. Tattoos you like are useful; so are photos of the real thing, such as a flower or an animal.
  • For cover-ups, clear photos of the old tattoo in natural light, or the tattoo itself if you are coming in.
  • An idea of size and placement, even a rough one. “Outer forearm, about the length of my hand” is enough.
  • A budget, if you have one. Your artist can tell you what that number realistically buys and whether it makes sense to plan the piece in stages.
  • Your calendar, if you are hoping to book at the end of the consult.

After the consultation

Your artist follows up with a flat quote for the piece and open dates. Every tattoo at Irish Rose is priced per piece, never by the hour. If the quote is over $500, a $50 minimum deposit holds your date and comes off the final price; it moves with you if you reschedule at least 48 hours ahead. The full rules are on the tattoo pricing page. Then the artist draws the design for your appointment day, and you review it before anything goes on skin.

Consultation questions

Does a tattoo consultation cost anything?

No. Consultations are free, whether in person or by phone, and there is no obligation to book afterward. A deposit only comes into it once you book work quoted over $500.

How do I book a consultation?

Use the booking form, pick your artist, and choose Consultation as the appointment type. Your artist will reply within two business days to set a time.

Do I need a consultation for a small tattoo?

Usually not. For small pieces the booking form with a description and a reference photo or two is enough to quote accurately. Consultations are most useful for large work and cover-ups.
